Police resume gorge search
Police resumed the Buller Gorge search for Christopher John Lewis yesterday, but found no sign that he was still in the area. Four members of the Christchurch armed offenders squad made the search, which concentrated on rugged bush
near the place where Lewis crashed a stolen car he was driving. Sergeant John Shirley, of Westport, said the search was not prompted by any sighting or. suspicious activity in the area. Sergeant Shirley said that local police had
made brief checks of the area and nearby buildings each day. The squad members had simply relieved Westport police of the duty. The police have found no trace of Lewis since he fled the car, which crashed down a 30m bank, last Thursday even-
ing. The police have clearly considered the possibility that Lewis drowned. Searches of the beach round the Buller rivermotith have proved unsuccessful. Thd car came to rest just 6m from the river, which was in flood at the time.
