Treasury’s information system to be studied

PA Wellington A study has been initiated to determine the most appropriate information technology for Treasury managers and desk officers, said the Secretary to the Treasury, Dr Graham Scott. He said the pay-off sought from the project was better quality and higher output, with less stress on Treasury staff. More than 30 local and

international companies had responded to an invitation seeking the right company to make a study of the Treasury’s information system needs. Logica Pty, of Australia, had won the contract to make a 15-week information management study, involving four of its staff. Desk officers are the Treasury financial analysts, economists, and accountants who prepare advice for the Minister of

Finance and the Cabinet and its committees. Each of them had to handle vast ranges of information and requests for information, Dr Scott said. “That includes requests from the Minister and other Ministers, Cabinet and Cabinet committee papers, submissions from departments, Parliamentary questions, statistics, forecasts, internal research and correspondence, a wide range of published material, the file histories in all those areas, their own work in progress, and their final products — usually in the form of a written report.”
