Christchurch I takes men’s club squash lead
Christchurch I hit the front in the men’s open grade inter-club squash competition with a fine 3-1 win over Lancaster Park on Tuesday evening. What might yet prove the vital match of the Blank Trophy round was fought between the respective No. 4s, Chris Gregory (Lancaster Park) and Fred Williams (Christchurch I). Gregory held three matchballs in the fourth set against Williams, the first at 8-0, but a mighty fightback allowed the Christchurch man to win in five games. Had Gregory won the rubber in four games his team would have won the over-all contest on a countback. Three weeks of this competition remain with Christchurch I striving to maintain a lead and win the Blank Trophy for the first time since 1980. It will have to go into its match against Burnside next week without the No. 2, Rod Hayes. Hayes made hard work of his contest against Brett Hibbert, who played some grand squash to win the first two games before falling in five. In other matches the
Sumner junior, Tristan Franklin, maintained his unbeaten record with a 3-0 win over Greg Peacock while Linwood’s relegation worries eased a little when it picked up its first win. For Linwood, Craig Hibbert was in an unforgiving mood against Football’s Steve MacDonald after dropping the first two games. The status quo remained'at the top of the women’s open grade table, both St Andrew’s and Mount Pleasant securing clean sweeps to leave the former still four points clear. Mount Pleasant was especially convincing against Lancaster Park 11, Carolyn Viggers, Ann Harliwich, Merle Holland and Sue Mullaly all winning in straight games. In a minor upset Christchurch prevailed over the third-placed Sumner after a countback of games, both June Edwards and Gaye Munnerley scoring convincing wins. It was a Sumner player, Sharyn Lane, who won the “Player of the Night” award, coming out on top over Agnes Huriwai after a hard-fought five-setter. It was Lane’s second win over a Bl in the
competition. Results: MEN Christchurch I 8, Lancaster Park 2 E. Jones lost to P. Viggers, 59, 6-9, 2-9; R. Hayes beat B. Hibbert, 3-9, 7-9, 9-6, 9-4, 9-2; W. Seebeck beat P.
