Trouble brought team closer

By

GLEN PERKINSON

New Zealand’s cricketing hero, Richard Hadlee, believes the national team’s recent ordeal in Sri Lanka brought it closer together. Hadlee told “The Press” last evening he was disappointed the tour had to be cut short “but it was the only thing that could have happened.” It was a unanimous decision by the members, he said. There was no fear among the players for their safety but everybody was “apprehensive” about the threatening situation. “It brought us ail closer together. We couldn’t go outside because of the curfews so we had to spend a lot of time together. “It (the political unrest) did not affect team morale but we were affected in other areas. It was very hard for the team to concentrate on playing cricket under such obvious tension and unrest, he said. His early return to New Zealand because of the cancellation means he will leave earlier than expected to join his English county side, Nottinghamshire.
