Hurunui rates

Sir,—ln your paper of April 20 in a report of the Hurunui County Council discussion on rates, Cr Shearer is quoted as saying that it was necessary to get rates in perspective as they were only 3.5 per cent of meat and wool farmers’ expenses and ranked tenth in farmers’ standing charges. I do not know where he got his figures from, but they seem to prove that rates in Hurunui County are far too high. My rates, and those of many of my neighbours, would need to be cut by 30 per cent to meet that figure. If there are properties in Hurunui County which meetfthis criterion then it comfirms a Mg-

held belief that some parts of the county are being bled to support others. It seems a strange perspective to use low rates in other counties to support a rise of 21 per cent in Hurunui. — Yours, etc. J. D. WILSON. Balcairn, April 21, 1987.
