Follow-up to ice show

By

Gillian Wainwright

in Britain

A lavish new ice ballet starring the British world ice-skating champion, Robin Cousins, is being planned as a follow-up by the maker of Torvill and Dean’s “Fire and Ice.” Cousins will play the prince in a spectacular production of the classic fairy tale “Sleeping Beauty.” The one-hour show will be made by Anglia Television. Ex?ected to cost more than 2.5 million, it has already been sold to the Public Broadcasting network in the United States. Cousins will be partnered by the American world champion, Rosalynn Summers, with a cast of 16 principal skaters from Britain, the United States, Canada and Germany. The director, Tom Gutteridge, who made “Fire and Ice,” said, “It will be one of the biggest and most lavish ice shows ever made for television. I said I did not want to be typecast as a director of ice shows, but this was too good an opportunity to miss. I said I would only be interested if I was given total freedom to rewrite one of the classic pieces of dance.” The show is likely to be shot outside Britain. As in the case of “Fire and Ice,” it has proved difficult to find a suitable place to record the show. The huge sets and camera cranes will not fit into existing ice rinks.
