‘Star wars’ obstacles thought daunting

NZPA-Reuter New York A panel of eminent physicists has concluded that it will take at least a decade of research to determine if President Ronald Reagan’s “star, wars” missile defence shield is feasible, according to the “New York Times.”

The newspaper, reporting yesterday on a study by a 15-member panel of the American Physical Society, said the physicists had concluded that so many breakthroughs are required in laser technology and particle-beam weaponry that it will be at least a decade before it is clear that the multi-bil-lion-dollar space-based defence plan can work. The study also concludes that there would have to be improvements ranging from tenfold to a million times in existing technology in order to have the defence shield perform as planned.
