Traditional services for Anzac Day

New Zealand will honour its war dead tomorrow in traditional Anzac Day observances throughout the nation.

Senior Government and Opposition members will attend services in the main centres. The Prime Minister, Mr Lange, will attend the dawn parade at the Dunedin War Memorial. The Minister of Defence, Mr O’Flynn, will represent the Government at the dawn parade at the Wellington War Memorial, and will attend the Returned Services Association’s Island Bay service at 9 a.m.

The Leader of the Opposition, Mr Bolger, will also attend the Wellington dawn service, and will lay a wreath on behalf of the Opposition at the 9.40 a.m. Citizens’ Service.

His deputy, Mr Gair, will attend the dawn service at the Auckland Museum and the later service at the Takapuna City War Memorial Hall. The main focus of Anzac Day observances in Christchurch will be Cathedral Square, where the dawn service will begin at the Citizens’ War Memorial at 6.30 a.m. The Minister of Overseas Trade and Marketing, Mr Moore, will represent the Government. The Australian Government will be represented by Captain M. C. L. Bailey, of the Royal Australian Navy.

The dawn service will be followed by a 7 a.m. breakfast at the Christchurch R.S.A. rooms, where the Mayor of Christchurch, Sir Hamish Hay, and Mr Moore will speak. The Deputy Prime Minister, Mr Palmer, will attend the 10 a.m. Citizens’ Service at Christchurch Cathedral.

As in previous years, suburban and country

branches of the R.S.A. will hold their own services.

The Papanui R.S.A. will parade at the gates of St James’ Park at 9.15 a.m. to march to a service at the clubrooms at the corner of Langdons Road and Main North Road at 10 a.m.

A World War I Fiat military truck is again expected to be on hand to carry those unable to march in the parade. The Paparua R.S.A., which holds its Anzac Day commemoration at Halswell, Prebbleton, Templeton, and Hornby on a four-year rotation will parade at Halswell this year. The parade will fall in outside the Halswell Tavern at 9.45 a.m. to march to St Mary’s Church for the service, which will be followed by a wreath-laying ceremony at the war memorial.

The address will be given by the former member of Parliament for Yaldhurst, Mr Michael Connelly. The parade will feature an old 25-pounder field gun, which was given to the branch in 1984 and is kept on show at the Yaldhurst Transport Museum. It will be on show outside the clubrooms after the parade.

The Sumner-Redcliffs branch will parade at 11 a.m. from outside All Saints’ Anglican Church in Wakefield Avenue. The service will be held at the Hollywood Theatre. Wreaths will be laid at the memorial gates outside the R.S.A. clubrooms.

The New Brighton branch will parade at the New Brighton Working Men’s Club car-park at 9.30 a.m to march behind the Working Men’s Club’s silver band. A short service and wreath-laying ceremony will take place at the war memorial in Marine Parade.
