Official seeks nomination

A senior Canterbury Labour Party official, Mr Denis O’Rourke, yesterday indicated that he would seek nomination as the party’s candidate for the Lyttelton seat Although an increasing number of names have been suggested as likely candidates to succeed Mrs Ann Hercus, Mr O’Rourke became the first candidate to announce that he would stand for nomina-

tion. “A number of people have asked me to seek nomination,” he said yesterday. Mr O’Rourke, a Public Trust lawyer, is a former campaign manager for Mrs Hercus in two elections. A member of the electorate committee, he has worked as a Labour Party regional councillor and electorate committee chairman. Other names tipped as possible nominations for the Labour-held seat

range from the former Labour Party candidate for Timaru, Ms Jan Walker, to a Christchurch City councillor, Ms Vicki Buck, and Wellingtonbased public relations man and former Labour Party communications officer, Mr Simon Walker. Ms Walker, a Rotorua lawyer, yesterday said that she had not given any thought to seeking nomination “at this stage,” but might consider the ques-

tion later. Mr Walker indicated that he would concentrate on standing for Labour in Wellington’s Pencarrow seat. “I haven’t given the question of seeking nomination in Lyttelton much thought. But it might be worth looking at the situation after nominations are decided for Pencarrow on May 8,” he said. Nominations for Lyttelton will close on May 21.
