A petition calling for a ban on vivisection in New Zealand will be launched today to mark the annual World Day for Laboratory Animals.

A spokesman for the Christchurch branch of the New Zealand AntiVivisection Society, Mr Bernie Calder, said it was the first petition to call for a complete ban on the use of animals for laboratory experiments. The petition will be run

throughout New Zealand. The Christchurch branch will have a display in Cathedral Square tomorrow. If it rains the display will be held in the Triangle Centre.

An American video called “Hidden Crimes” will be shown. It includes film made by the Animal Liberation Front during a raid on a laboratory where animals were being used for experiments.
