O’Kane trails by one

NZPA staff correspondent Sheffield Auckland’s Dene O'Kane won the last three frames of the opening session to trail the world No. 2, Cliff Thorburn, by just one frame, 4-5* in the first round of the world snooker championships at Sheffield yesterday. O’Kane, ranked thirtyninth in the world, looked to be in real trouble when the calm Canadian romped away with the first three frames, putting down breaks of 41, 32 and 49 in the process. But the London-based O’Kane hit back strongly with a run of 64 to gain

his first success of the day and although Thorburn then took the next two frames to lead, 5-1, O’Kane was never far away. A break of 52 gave him the seventh frame by an 82-4 margin and he took the next on the black after a marathon 46 minutes to cut the gap to just two frames. And a break of 37 proved enough to secure the last frame of the session and leave him with more than an outside chance of stopping Thorbum’s bid for the £BO,OOO ($225,000) first prize when the match resumes this morning.
