Voli Star brilliant in Riccarton training

By J. J. BOYLE Voli Star was a youthful star of the. training at Riccarton yesterday. She came more strongly into the reckoning for the South Island Three-Year-Old Championship Stakes tomorrow when she reeled off 1400 m on the plough in 1:27 after cutting out the opening 800 m in 48.6 s in the hands of her race rider, Grant Davison. Some Reason and Phareef were other North Island horses to leave their stamp of quality on yesterday’s training, held in fine weather with firm footing offering. The Matamata-trained Some Reason started easily near the 800 m but quickened for the last 600 m, returning 37.2 s for that sector. The Woodville-trained Phareef wound up impressively in his 1200 m aasignment on the plough. He hurried through his task in 1:17.6, the last 600 m brilliantly in 35.65.

His big late run into second in the 2000 m 3ZB Gassic on Monday gave every promise of ability to master more ground in a race like the Great Autumn Stakes (2500 m but his programme has been left open, the alternative, the richer Lion Brown Handicap (1600 m Robinski, one of the strongest hopes of the home brigade in the South Island Three-Year-Old Championship Stakes, did his cause no harm when he sprinted 1200 m ih 1:17.4, the last 800 m in 50.25, the final 600 m in 37.65. Sir Humphrey was showing just ahead of his stablemate, Delarenne, finishing 1200 m in 1:20.45, the last 600 m in 38.45. Imposing Lad and Asti Bay, two more members of the Paddy Busuttin team, were paired to run 800 m in 50.25, the last 600 m in 36.65. Imposing Lad had the outside running and ran very keenly — a characteristic of his

performance last Monday, when he faded fast near the end of 1200 m. Maestri got through 1400 m in 1:34.4, the last 600 m in 31.6. The two-year-old Princess Perfection was going well alongside Moana Isle finishing 600 m in 36.25. It was smart work. Dashing King, one of Princess Perfection’s rivals tomorrow, got through his 600 m in 37.85. Camallino Star recorded 1:7.8 for 1000 m, the final 600 m in 40s. Her stablemates, Lady Blandford and Turf Cruiser, took 1:36.4 for 1400 m, but picked up the work rate for the last 600 m in 38.85. Keen Pell and Hypatia returned 1:31.2 for their 1400 m, the last 800 m in 52.2, the final 600 m in 38.25. Reingard appeared on a firm No. 1 grass for an assignment that made no demands on his turn of speed. He recorded 1:55.8 for his 1600 m and was allowed to quicken for the final 600 m in 38.45.
