Belfast awaits winner
Canterbury’s two top cueists, Dave Meredith and Brian Kirkness, will play an eight-hour billiards match this weekend, to determine their rankings for the world amateur championship in Belfast, Northern Ireland, in November. Both men received automatic invitations, Meredith as the 1985 national champion and Kirkness as the 1986 winner. In last year’s final
Kirkness beat Meredith to end the latter’s six-year grip on the title. This week-end’s match will decide who gets the top ranking and all his expenses paid. The loser will have to pay a share of his travel and accommodation costs. The game will be at the Cuthberts Green room and will be in four twohour sessions — 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8
p.m. both Saturday and Sunday.
Meredith showed that he was in good touch for the playoff when he won a masters’ tournament in Pukekohe last week-end, beating Russell Robinson (Wellington) in the final. Another Canterbury entrant, Ken Giles, reached the semi-finals. Meredith . made eight century breaks during the tournament, with a top of 182.
