Work for coal handling

Work has started on the first stage of improving the Port of Lyttelton’s coal-hand-ling facilities. Last week the Lyttelton Harbour Board started building the first stage of a new railway line at Te Awaparahi Bay, to be used by new 50tonne coal waggons. Eventually these will replace the present 15-tonne waggons.

Last year the New Zealand Ports' Authority gave permission for the $6.45 million project to improve coal handling at the port, after the Government decided to continue exporting West Coast coal through Lyttelton. The project is expected to take about two years and will make for more efficient coal handling. Over the next few days there will be an influx of coal ships in port. Four coal ships are expected this week. At present the Oregon Rainbow is berthed at Cashin Quay No. 1 to load coal for Japan. Later in the week the Yamahiro Maru will load 60,000 tonnes of coal for Japan. The port’s traffic manager, Mr David Jones, said the coal ships were not keeping to regular schedules, and all had arrived at once. There had not been a dramatic increase in coal trade.
