S.I. school swimming records fall
The class of competitor in the South Island secondary school swimming championships was reflected in the breaking of seven individual records in the 1987 finals at Queen Elizabeth II Park on Saturday evening.
The oldest record to fall at the championships was the boys’ under 15 years 100 m freestyle, Keenan Wockner (Otago Boys’ High School) being timed at an outstanding 57.205. He was the only swimmer in the field to break the one-minute barrier. The seven-year-old mark of Andrew Smith (Kaikorai Valley H.S.) was bettered by 0.45.
Wocker had an excellent night, achieving a clean sweep in the freestyle events. In the same age group Matthew Davonport (Middleton Grange) was responsible for setting two new marks with times of Imin 15.81 s for the 100 m breaststroke and 2min 46.06 s for the 200 m breaststroke. The old records were broken by 1.49 s and 0.64 s respectively. The Shirley Boys’ High School swimmer, Joseph Ward, was also inside the old times in finishing second to Davenport in both races. Phillippa Langrell, (St Margaret’s College), an impressive winner of the girls’ open 400 m freestyle event, broke the record for the under 15 years 200 m freestyle. Her time of 2min 16.79 s was just 0.12 s inside the old mark held jointly by Lisa Chamberlain and Linda Robinson.
Robinson (Papanui H.S.) broke two records. Her time of 2min 28.42 s in the 200 m individual medley was 0.58 s inside Kim Dewar’s old lime and her Imin 01.21 s in the over 15 years 100 m freestyle was 0.46 s better than Lisa Chamberlain’s record. The other record fell in the girls' over 15 years 50m free style, Joanne Tapper (Southland G.H.S.) cutting out the distance in 28.365. Again Chamberlain was the holder of the previous mark, 28.55. While he finished nearly 2.5 s outside the record- in the boys’ open 400 m freestyle Nick Dahl (Otago Boys’ High School) stood out with his stamina and distinctive stroking action.
In the boys section, Christchurch Boys’ High School was clearly on top with 33 points to Otago Boys’ High School’s 24, with Southland B.H.S. third on 23.
Rangi Ruru was the top girls’ school with 18 points, ahead of Christchurch G.H.S. (16) and St Margaret’s College (15). Abbreviations used in the results are:-
