Becker triumphs
NZPA-AP Milan, Italy The top-seeded Boris Becker, of West Germany, defeated Mlloslav Mecir, of Czechoslovakia, 6-4, 6-3 in the final of the $U5345,000
($614,100) Fila Trophy indoor tennis tournament at Milan yesterday. The West German player, aged 19 and ranked second in the world, scored his first indoor victory of the season at the Palatrussardi tent-
theatre in one hour and 21 minutes. Becker pocketed a first prize of $97,900. Mecir, second-seeded in the competition, received $55,000. Becker, a two-time Wimbledon champion, relied
on his serve and het play to overcome the classy Czech, aged 22. Mecir played well from the baseline but often was in trouble against Becker’s aggressive play.
The young red-head, playing his second indoor tournament of the season, served seven aces and three double faults during the final, watched by a sell-out crowd of 8000. Mecir served three double faults, one in the final game of the second set, and a single ace. The victory raised Becker’s record of wins against Mecir to 4-2.
