Commitment to safe use of glass

Winstone Glass is committed to the safe use of glass throughout New Zealand, says the Christchurch branch manager, Mr Alan Trent. “We train our staff to advise people on the correct use of glass around the home, particularly sliding doors and shower doors, , where most accidents happen,” he says.

“There are two main types of safety glass in use today and each has its own application. “Toughened glass is hard to break. If it does, it shatters into relatively blunt granules. “Laminated glass isn’t as strong as toughened glass but has the advantage of staying in place when broken — it only

cracks. "This is due to the layer of plastic which is sandwiched between two pieces of glass. “We can even prove our dedication to safety,” says Mr Trent.

“We have just spent $2 million on a glass toughening plant. The plant is located in Auckland and will serve the whole country’s requirements.” The Christchurch branch of Winstone Glass has a staff of 31.

The manager, Mr Alan Trent, has worked in the glass industry for 13 years, and is the president of the Canterbury Glass Merchants Association.

The assistant manager is Mr Colin Eaton, who has worked in the indus-

try for six years, and whose speciality is Clearvue. Mr Phil Kortegast is the sales manager. He has had years of experience in the motor industry and his speciality is windscreens. The company representative is Mr Sean Hanlon who was formerly a glazier. He has worked for 14 years in the glass industry, and his specialities are plastics and silicone.

The Christchurch branch supervisor is Mr Derek Aldous. He has over-all control of all trade staff and glaziers (excluding auto). He learnt the trade in London, and has spent 30 years working in the industry.
