‘The Legend’

SARNIA RUSBRIDGE
Chapter 2 “The First Year of My Life” I was bom on January 18, 1973, at Rossenama Stud. My Dam was Toad Flax, a calm mare who would win almost every
race she was entered in and my Sire Greylander Grenadier (related to Red Rum and Phar Lap) was a sprinter like Toad Flax.
The first few months of my life were spent in Two Tree Paddock with Toad Flax. Then in a few months time I was taken to the stables. “Why?”
“Because Carrots, I was to be a sprinter. If I was to be a steeplechaser I would have been left out for quite a while longer.” “Oh. Continue.” At the stables I was taught to lead and to behave properly. During the night I was put into a loose-box, a big wide stable. It felt strange. I could not run, be stupid, or anything like that and I missed Toad Flax, but I soon got over that. When I was a yearling
(one-year-old) my groom told me that I was to be sold privately. All of that night I spent wondering and dreaming about what my new owner would be like. I hoped he or she would be kind.
Well my new owner came and I got quite a shock. “What was that?” Carrots asked.
“My new owner was not nice at all. He paid a lot for me, but I would rather be a work horse.”
Greylander Fallowstream was about to start telling Carrots about his new owner when his groom came and got him. “I’ll just be a little while, Carrots, be back in no time.”
“I hope so Greye, if I may call you that?” “Certainly.” To be continued
