Parrella confident
PA Wellington The defending champion, Rob Parrella, of Australia, was still cocky after his first loss in the Kiwi Bonds international bowls classic at Raumati yesterday. Despite a straight-set loss to New . Zealand’s Commonwealth Games gold medallist, lan Dickison, Parrella does not see the Dunedin bowler as the man to beat in the tournament. “He won’t win,” Parrella said. Dickison won, 7-6, 7-5, his consistent draw bowls eventually outfoxing the confident driving of Parrella, who won the inaugural classic in Christchurch in 1983 and repeated the triumph at Lower Hutt last year. Parrella and Dickison from section one are assured of places in the quarter-finals, though Dickison bad a surprise loss to the Aucklander, Doug Kent, earlier yesterday. The only other player assured of qualifying is Taranaki’s Commonwealth Games representative, Maurice Symes, who finished with
six wins in section four. Peter BeUiss’ qualification was made all but certain when he scraped to a win in ’ three sets over the Australian, Paul Richards. Beiliss won the third set 7-6, after trailing, 0-5, after three ends. The key interest in section one today will be in which of Parella and Dickison takes the top position. In' section two, the Northlander, Warwick Edgar, Canterbury’s Morgan Moffat and Auckland's Ivan Kostanlch have chances of qualifying, and minimal chances of throwing Beiliss out of the race. In section three, the match between the leader and national singles champion, Ken Walker, of Dunedin, and Manawatu’s Phil Skoglund will decide the top spot — but the loser will be under threat from the Australian, lan Schuback, and the Kapitl junior, Raymond Boffa. In the other section, the 1985 winner, Rowan Brassey, of Auckland, is challenged for the second berth by the Australian, Ken Williams, and the 1982 national singles champion, Jim Scott, of Wellington.
