Squad named for indoor Cup
A training squad, minus members of the New Zealand hockey team which toured Argentina last month, has been named to prepare for the first indoor World Cup tournament in Canberra next year.’ The squad was chosen after a national indoor tournament in Palmerston North last month by a selection panel comprising Paul Ackerley (Manawatu), Alwyn Riggs (Auckland) and Bryan Reid (Canterbury). Only players who attended the national tournament have been included in the squad, but the selectors have said that players can be added to the squad or deleted at any time, which will allow them to include members of the national team.
Mr Ackerley, a former New Zealand representative arid a member of the team that won the Olympic gold medal at Montreal in 1976, will coach the squad and Mr Riggs will be the manager. The squad'will have a training week-end towards the end of the year, and the team for the World Cup in March, will be named after the next national indoor toumainent on February 6 and 7 next year. The squad is:— Don Davis, Graeme Hall, Chris Brown, Ross Fowler, Derick Leaver (Auckland); Mike Davis, Hus Bhika, Paul
Boater, Graeme Taylor (Wellington); Robin Wilson, Peter Tyrian, Scott Hobson (Canterbury); Wayne Frost, Richard Calkin, Nigel Timms, Simon Willocks (Manawatu); 'David Ross (Otago). . , Arthur Parkin (Auckland), a former New Zealand captain, has been added to the New Zealand junior selection panel. He joins Barry and Selwyn Maister (Canterbury) and Pieter Jongejan, the national director of coaching on the selection panel.
The Australian Institute of. Sport men’s hockey team will make a twoweek tour of New Zealand in November. An itinerary of 10 games has been submitted to the institute for approval. All games will be played on artificial pitches in Whangarei, Wellington arid Christchurch.
The itirierary is:—
November 1: v. Auckland at Whangarei; November 2: v. New Zealand Country at Whangatei; November 4: v. New K -Zealand .Country at Whangarei; November 5: v. Northland at Whangarei; November 7: v.'New Zealand juniors at Wellington; November 8: v. Wellington at Wellington; November 9 v. New Zealand juniors at Wellington; November 11: v. New Zealand XI at Christchurch; November 12: v. Canterbury at Christchurch; November 13: v. New Zealand XI at Christchurch. \
