Demonstrations, competitions displays and fun-rides
There will be fun and excitement for all at the Traction Engine Rally and Vintage Country Fair in Springston this week-end.
A full programme of entertainment which includes displays, competitions and demonstrations of various skills, has been organised for the two-day extravaganza which will start at 10 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
Traction engines, vintage tractors, vintage cars, vintage farm machinery, stationary engines, and vintage household utensils will all be on display. A display by the first squadron New Zealand Scottish Armoured Corps, including tanks, troop carriers and weapons, will also be on view throughout the week-end.
Working exhibits will include a ploughing display using Clydesdale horses, a threshing mill and a chaff cutter.
Match ploughing will be demonstrated, and there will be sheaf-tossing and caber-tossing competitions.
Other competitions will include a Miss Autumn contest and a Mr Muscle contest for the under 10s, a period-costume and a bike-decorating competition, and a traction-engine-pulling contest.
Several country and western bands will be playing throughout the day, there will be a pet parade organised by the local school, and vintage novelty events such as
traction engine races and novelty games using vintage tractors will take place. There will be an army display, demonstrations of sheep shearing and fire fighting, police dogs will be on display and there will be a pony-club display.
Traction engine rides, pony rides and hay rides will add to the country fair atmosphere, as will the merry-go-rounds, chocolate wheels, and Noddy train.
There will be a hangi, and meals and ice-creams will be available. Side shows and arts and crafts stalls will also be there to entertain those not watching displays or competitions. The Traction Engine Rally and the Vintage Country Fair will be held on Mr D. J. Picken’s property on the SpringstonBurnham Road.
Admission will be $2, and for children under 12 it will be free.
