Family Life

Sir, —Family Life Education Council members have read “The Press” outline of the Roper Report with great interest and wry cynicism. The council presents programmes in secondary schools where young people are offered information on children’s development and needs and the responsibilities of parenthood, and time with a parent and young baby so that some of the realism of parenting can be experienced. A research project showed that it was successful. Secondly; the council responds to requests from the community for information about aspects of parenting. Professional educators know and respect the work undertaken. Why is it then that the council has so much difficulty obtaining funding? A continuous approach has been made to both Government and trust bodies, with some small success, but with the withdrawal of the V.O.T.P. scheme the council has insufficient funds to meet the demand. Who better to do this work than this successful and experienced body? Where are the offers of financial support? — Yours, etc., CAROL EGGLESTON, President, F.L.E.C. March 12, 1987.
