Nuclear stance

Sir, —New Zealand peace movement opposition over the years to the Reagan Government’s nuclear policies has been amply justified by recent revelations about the Administration’s underhand dealings. The Administration was incompetent and very wrong about the arms affair with Iran and aid to the contras; it is also very wrong about “star wars.” Fortunately, the United States Congress seems to be aware of that now. It is very important that Congress prevents “star wars” from endangering the A.8.M., Outer Space and Limited Test Ban Treaties. The recent work on a treaty to remove intermediate-range missiles from Europe is good news but disarmament has a long way to go. It would be a mistake for New Zealand to seek to rejoin A.N.Z.U.S. without having a firm commitment that the United States has embarked on massive cuts to its land and sea-based nuclear arsenals (in parallel with similar Russian cuts). — Yours, etc.,

COLIN BURROWS. March 12, 1987.
