Eighth suspicious fire at Sunnyside
Sunnyside Hospital has had eight suspicious fires
since the beginning of the year.
The latest — and the most serious — was at 7.10 p.m. on Sunday. The fire damaged a newlyrenovated creche.
The fire, started in a stack of rubbish, was seen by a security guard. The hospital superintendent, Dr Les Ding, said most of the eight fires had been in administration areas, and had started between 4 p.m. andull
p.m. Little or no
had been caused, and noone had been hurt.
"There is no way of knowing who lit these. It
is possible it was a patient, but outsiders could also easily be involved. We can only speculate,” he said.
Security has been tightened at the hospital over the last month, and Dr Ding said staff members were “that much more vigilant.” The Christchurch police arson squad is following several lines of inquiry.
