N.Z. youth declare at 358 for four
PA Auckland Mark Douglas, of Nelson, scored 115 to enable New Zealand under-20 to declare at 358 for four wickets in the third youth cricket test against Australia under-19 at Auckland yesterday. His effort, after Rob MacKinlay’s 121 on Sunday, provided some satisfaction for the New Zealand te'am which was soundly beaten by Australia in the first two tests.
At stumps on a day in which two hours were lost because of rain, Australia was 19 without loss in reply.
The Australian attack struggled for the first time in the series against the New Zealand bats-
men, with Scott Prestwidge, who destroyed the home side in the second test at New Plymouth, claiming just one for 37 off 12 overs. However, the tourists’ attack has been considerably weakened by the loss of Alistair de Winter who has returned to play McDonalds Cup. cricket for Tasmania.
Douglas’s century was scored off 208 balls, and included 18 boundaries. New Zealand’s manager, Haig Whiting, said: “It is nice to win, of course, but this is also about gaining experience for us. We have, comparatively speaking, a sparse first-class scene for youth cricketers here and it takes much longer than a few weeks to find out
what cricket at this level is all about. NEW ZEALAND First innings R. MacKinlay c and b Prestwidge 121 M. Lamont lbw b McKissack 5 D. Murray c Williams b McKissack 40 M. Douglas not out 115 J.
