Chief Commander claims special attention

Special correspondent Auckland Chief Commander, seeking his fourth win on end, claims special attention at the Waikato Racing Club’s meeting at Te Rapa today while an improved showing will be expected from Leading Glance in the Te Puninga Handicap. Leading Glance is topweight, with 56kg, in the 2100 m event which is the first leg of the Waikato Racing Club’s T.A.B. double, third leg of the treble and the trifecta race. Chief Commander has 2kg less, and with Shy Shari, Star Award and Misty Topaz also engaged the material is there for an interesting contest for class two. It is difficult enough to notch a hattrick of wins on the Auckland and Waikato circuit yet Chief Commander’s chances of a fourth on end must be well regarded. When Chief Commander beat Silver Rhapsody at Ellerslie last time out, on February 25, his record read 18 starts for five firsts, seven seconds and two other minor placings. That is consistency indeed so it will be right out of character if he does not make his presence felt in today’s race. Jetbet: 7 Race 1 11.20 PEACH JUMPERS FLAT $5000; 2200 m 1 1360 Maluta 4 P. Leading Glance ran well below her best, finishing last, at Te Awamutu the other week but, according to her trainer, Roger Waller, the effort is best forgotten. Evidently she failed to handle the turning course, being trapped wide in any case and losing ground on every bend. Waller reports that nothing was found to be wrong with her and she has pleased him since. Her previous form was excellent — four wins and a third from five attempts — and she is well worthy of another chance. Star Award has had a chance to freshen since running below expectations, although fourth, at Ellerslie on February 21, He should give Chief Commander and Leading Glance most opposition. With Pesaro drawn so wide, Beach Tango is the probable favourite in the second leg, the 1200 m Carrington Handicap. Beach Tango has lined up only four times for three firsts and a close second. Commanding Officer, all the way from Woodville, and Lord Century, are almost as promising and receive weight from Beach Tango. 16 3060 Regal Drum 1 G. Childs 55.0 17 00 Sandy Oak 11 J.
