Gavaskar leads bid for test victory

NZPA-Reuter Bangalor, India India’s master batsman, Sunil Gavaskar, on the verge of retiring, defied fine spin and pace bowling on the third day yesterday to keep the fifth and final test against Pakistan on course for an exciting finish. Gavaskar was 51 not out as India, chasing 221 to win the match and the series, ended the day at 99 for four on a turning wicket. The previous four tests were drawn. Pakistan had earlier made 249, resuming at an overnight 155 for five, thanks to valuable contributions from the wicket-keeper, Saleem Yousef (41 not out) and the skipper, Imran Khan (39). For India, the spinner, Ravi Shastri, took four for 69 while Maninder Singh captured

three wickets to end the match with figures of 10 for 126.

Pakistan took a grip on the match when the left-arm fast bowler, Wasim Akram dismissed Krishnamachari Srikkanth and Mohinder Amarnath in successive balls to reduce India to 15 for two.

Dilip Vengsarkar overshadowed Gavaskar for a short while until he was bowled by the spinner, Tauseef Ahmed, for 19. Tauseef stuck again by removing the wicket-keeper, Kiran More, promoted in the batting order, for three.

Then Gavaskar, who in yesterday’s innings became only the second man to score 2000 runs in tests against Pakistan, and Mohammed Azharuddin (seven not out) saw out the close.

Today is a rest day and when the match resumes most of India will be looking to the man they call the little master. Scores.—
