Cash aid for exporters

PA Wellington The Government will pay up to $25,000 to companies hiring a manager to expand their export sales during 1987-88. A plan to subsidise the salaries of export managers and marketing consultants working in particular firms is part of the Government’s export assistance package to replace market development tax incentives which start phasing down from April 1. The $2O million package was announced last October.

Companies will also be able to apply for grants to research new markets, promote products, travel overseas to explore opportunities or bring prospective buyers to New Zealand.

The grants were proposed by the new Market Development Board after consultation with exporters around the country late last year. The board’s chairman, Mr Peter Shirtcliffe, said the proposals had been approved without change

by the Government and the board would be ready to receive applications from companies next month.

The package was biased towards helping small or medium-sized companies break into exporting or lift their performance, Mr Shirtcliffe said.
