‘Big is beautiful’ says Mittons
Women who have problems finding attractive evening wear to fit sizes 16 and up, will be happy to know that there is a shop which specialises for the larger woman at the Countdown Centre, situated between Clarence and Rotherham Streets.
Catering for ages 16 to 90 years, Mittons caters for all tastes from conservative through to the up-market fashions, from casual to evening wear. Designed as a "onestop” shop, Mittons stocks casual-wear, evening wear and lingerie for the larger
woman. Plains, stripes, polka-dots, and other patterned materials are all provided. Denims are another strong seller for the shop.
It’s a myth that larger women cannot wear nice clothes, say the shop managers. They believe that “big is beautiful,” and they provide very positive service for their customers.
With another shop in Manchester Street, Mittons has established a loyal following from many women who for a long time were often forced to
have garments specially made to fit them, or sewed their own clothes.
Jewellery and other accessories such as hats are also provided at the shop. Mittons also specially orders what it needs from manufacturers rather than let manufacturers dictate what the larger woman should wear.
