Designing began for family
PA Wellington A Napier woman who started designing for her own family has won New Zealand’s premier fashion prize. Trish Beach, a selfemployed designer, received the Benson and Hedges Supreme Award for Fashion at the Michael Fowler Centre,
Wellington, on Thursday evening. Mrs Beach’s winning entry, which also took the Tanners’ Association’s Leather in Fashion Award, was an ensemble of soft New Zealand lambskin separates in shades of black and grey, described by the judges as “a very wearable combination of gar-
ments.” She won also the After Five High Fashion Award with an elegant, rich claret velvet gown, falling to a low back and trimmed with pearls. Mrs Beach first entered the Benson and Hedges Fashion Design Awards last year, when she won the High
Fashion Daywear with another lambskin outfit, which came close to the supreme award.
She has had no formal design training, but started by designing for her own family.
She has her own business, designing and manufacturing fashion garments, mainly in leather.
