Twelve new swimming records set
Twelve meeting records got the chop at the Canterbury inter-secondary schools’ swimming finals at Queen Elizabeth II Park on Thursday evening. All but two were set by swimmers who used the meeting as part of their preparation for the B.N.Z. national open championships which start in the same pool next Wednesday. Most of the records had been set in the heats on Monday and Tuesday, but there were two records of note that were broken.
In the boys under 15 years 50m freestyle, Grant Harris (Christchurch 8.H.5.), broke a record that had stood for 17 years. Harris recorded 28.08 s in the final which bettered the record set by Robin McCabe, then at Riccarton High School, in 1970. In the girls under 16 years 50m backstroke Anna Simcic (Linwood High School) recorded a very good time of 31.69 s which broke the old record of 32.3 s set in 1979 by the former New Zealand representative, Melanie Jones. Philippa Langrell, a 14-year-old from St Margaret’s College and a candidate for a national butterfly title next week, powered the 50m butterfly in 30.98 s to break the under 15-years record of 31.61 s she set in the heats.
Linda Robinson (Papanui High School), swimming a secondary event, the 100 m freestyle, recorded Imin 2.275.
The other record breakers were Jason Power (Christchurch 8.H.5.), under-16, 50m freestyle; Sarah Harrow (Rangi Ruru), under-14, 100 m freestyle; Kate Stokes (Christchurch G.H.S.), under 15, 50m breaststroke; Jane Collins (Christchurch G.H.S.), under 16, 50m freestyle; Joseph Ward (Shirley 8.H.5.), under 14, 50m breaststoke; Dallas Hibbs (Shirley 8.H.5.), under 15, 50m butterfly; Matthew Davenport (Middleton Grange), under-15, 50m breaststroke; Fleur Pollitt
