Britain to build more N-plants
NZPA-Reuter London The British Government yesterday approved construction of a new generation of nuclear power plants, dismissing arguments that they are unnecessary and unsafe after last year’s Chernobyl accident in the Soviet Union.
The Secretary for Energy, Peter Walker, told Parliament of plans to build Britain’s first pressurised water reactor alongside an existing nuclear facility at Sizewell,, on the east coast of England. Approval had been expected after Britain’s longest public inquiry gave the go-ahead to the £1.5 billion ($4.1 billion) project earlier this year. However, the two-year-long inquiry did not take into account the Chernobyl accident.
