Arms control critic quits

NZPA-Reuter Washington Richard Perle, the Reagan Administration’s most controversial expert on arms control, is leaving the Defence Department after six years of firing barbs at liberals in Washington and the N.A.T.O. alliance.

Mr Perle, a strong critic of past super-Power arms agreements who is known as “Doctor Doom” by arms control advocates, said yesterday he had resigned as Assistant Defence Secretary for International Security Affairs in order to complete a novel.

Published reports have said Mr Perle he has been offered up to SUS3OO,OOO ($517,000)’ for his novel about international diplomacy and intrigue. Mr Perle denied any split with the Administration, in fact, he predicted that Washington and

Moscow were moving towards a just and verifiable agreement on removing intermediate-range nuclear missiles in Europe. Many United States arms control advocates have given Mr Perle a large measure of credit — or blame — for a lack of new super-Power arms control agreements since Mr Reagan took office.
