Stolen ring may go overseas
The manager of McLeay’s Jewellers, Mrs Janet Miller, fears that a $24,000 ring stolen from the shop might be taken out of New Zealand to be sold.
It would be difficult to sell such a valuable ring in New Zealand because it would be recognised quickly by a jeweller, she said.
The 1.52 carat ring was stolen on Thursday, March 5, from the High Street shop. Staff noticed it was
missing soon after three women dressed in Indian clothes had left the shop after handling the ring and several others on a display board usually locked in the front window.
Although set in a plain gold claw the ring was rare because of its size and value, said Mrs Miller.
It was used to promote the shop’s opening early in February. Few customers would have been able to buy it, she said.
