Ferry hit harbour wall?
NZPA-AAP London The ill-fated cross-chan-nel ferry Herald of Free Enterprise may have struck the harbour wall at Zeebrugge before capsizing, according to three independent groups of experts. Their new evidence suggests the ship’s propellers were damaged when she hit, forcing her into a 180 deg. turn which would have been disastrous whether or not the bow doors had been open. The eastern wall of Zeebrugge Harbour was extended more than a year ago, but experts say buoys marking a clear channel had not been positioned. It is thought the Herald of Free Enterprise may have hit the wall’s submerged foundations damaging two or three of her seven propellers.
