Boock unable to tour

Stephen Boock has become the third member of the New Zealand cricket team to make himself unavailable for the tour of Sri Lanka which begins next month. The left-arm spin bowler has withdrawn from contention because of business reasons. He also missed the 1986 New Zealand tour of England. Though twelfth man in the present test against the West Indians, Boock

has enjoyed a successful series. His seven wickets, at a cost of 180 runs, have taken Boock’s test total to 72 from 28 matches. Only Hedley Howarth, with 86, has been a more prolific wicket-taker among New Zealand spinners. Boock’s non-availability should not be as much of a problem for the national selectors as the retirement of the captain, Jeremy Coney, and the New Zealand Cricket

Council’s decision to release the experienced opening batsman, John Wright. The Wellington left-arm spinner and very capable middle-order batsman, Evan Gray, is the logical replacement. Gray has made four previous tours, and has twice played in Sri Lanka. The team to tour Sri Lanka will be announced after the test at Lancaster Park, which is scheduled to end on Monday.
