Parlane’s loss a blow to Chch golf
By
BOB SCHUMACHER
John Parlane will be sorely missed by the Christchurch Golf Club when he assumes his new position as branch manager of OTC office supplies in Hamilton on March 23. The posting is the result of promotion in the company. “I will miss my golf and friends in Christchurch but the promotion was something I couldn’t afford to turn down,” Parlane said yesterday. All Parlane’s golf has been at Shirley and he has been playing for half of his 30 years. For the last few years he has been on the club’s management committee with a special involvement and interest in the junior section.
A member of six successful Christchurch teams in the premier inter-club competition for the Woodward Cup, Parlane has been in the club’s top side for the last 10 years and has the remarkable record of 49 wins and 13 halves from 77 matches. Twice he was the winner of the Stan Rich
salver for the player with the best record in the competition and, on the second occasion, in 1984, he won all nine contests. That year was crowned for him by his selection as the “Canterbury golfer of the year.”
Parlane, a consistent rather than spectacular golfer, played 14 matches for Canterbury between 1978 and 1985. His proudest moment in Canterbury golf came in 1978 when he won the coveted Russley 72-hole tournament from a high-class field. Three years later he was runner-up to Ross Murray in the Canterbury stroke-play championship. Although business is expected to keep Parlane fully occupied initially, he intends to take his golf seriously when time allows.
