Hitler lazy, said Goebbels
NZPA-AFP Munich The Nazi propaganda chief, Joseph Goebbels, wrote in his diary that Hitler was “lazy” and that his close collaborators were a “beer-hall clique.” These are among the revelations of Goebbels’ diary to be published in Munich. The Munich Institute of Contemporary History has acquired about two-thirds of the diary notebooks. Goebbels ordered his secretary to burn them in Hitler’s bunker besieged by the Allies in Berlin, but he had only enough time to burn part of them. Most of the crates containing the notebooks were taken by the Russian Army, and some by a cleaning woman who gave them to the institute in 1960. Some of the notebooks in the Soviet Union mysteriously came into the hands of an intermediary.
Professor Elke Froehlich of the institute obtained other fragments of the diary in the United States. The institute has 6000 pages in Goebbels’ handwriting and 12,000 pages typed by his secretary. They cover the period from 1924 to 1941. Professor Froehlich said hand-writing experts and police investigations had confirmed the authenticity of the notebooks.
