NZPA-AAP Sydney Australian sharemarkets broke out of a four-day selloff as investor confidence returned, prompting bargain hunting across a broad range of stocks. Investors overcame early hesitancy as solid support emerged in afternoon trading for miners, gold stocks and selected blue chip industrials. Early sluggishness gave way to active trading as national turnover jumped to 231.68 million shares worth sAust237.l9M with rises and falls about even. BHP recorded another strong performance with a 10c gain to a record 1090 close as investors attempt to gain entry into the company’s new gold float. Gold stocks surged ahead as bullion rose to $U5409.20/ 70 an ounce in Hong Kong

and as bullish sentiment gripped the market. GMK jumped 60c to 2260, Emperor rose 50c to 820, Central Norseman added 40 to 1420 c while Kidston shed 20 to 700. Heavyweight miners were also in demand following stronger base metal prices in London overnight. Western Mining rose 24c to 650, CRA advanced 22c to 678, North Broken Hill jumped 15 to 250 c and Renison was 10c higher at 1350, Among the industrials. Lend Lease rose 30c to 1300, 20c gains took Bums, Philp to 1060 and Arnotts to 580 with Bell Group up 10c at 1020. Adsteam, however, fell 40 to 1410 following strong gains earlier this week. Brambles dropped 20 to 860 but News Corp recovered from early heavy losses to finish steady at 2300.
