Broking house first
PA Wellington Kennedy’s Sharebrokers, Ltd, the first metropolitan broking house in New Zealand to be “steered” by a woman principal, was opened this week. The principal, Mrs Elspeth Kennedy, said she had been practising on her own behalf since July last year, and the opening of the trading house in central Wellington was the culmination of her efforts to establish her own business. Business services for women and dealing in the Asian markets were two areas the firm would concentrate on, as well as domestic sharebroking and money market services. The firm planned to have a women’s business
affairs department. The service would be open to men as well, but Mrs Kennedy said she was keen to encourage women in business. Later in the year the firm’s interests would be expanded overseas, Mrs Kennedy said. The firm, which had a staff of 14, would also act on the domestic market for private clients, and had no minimum brokerage fee. Mrs Kennedy is also a director of the Mount Cook Group, an alternate director of Kingsgate International, a director of Development Management Resources, chairman of the Nelson Bays Regional Council and a member of the New Zealand Tourism Council.
