Parliamentary salaries
Sir, —By what measurement does the Prime Minister think that members of Parliament, and especially the Government, are entitled to any pay increase, let alone one of 10 per cent? At the moment there is a very good case for substantial salary reductions, including the highly privileged tax-free allowances. During roughly 10 years of financial management by previous administrations a very large external debt was created, yet with just two and a half years under the direction of the present Government it has soared again. It appears that hard-working, profitable taxpayers are being forced to “feather-bed” incompetent management. Present economic policies dictate that unprofitable commercial enterprises succeed or perish without pity. Why should this principle be varied for Governments? — Yours, etc., B. R. MALCOLM.
