Sea-faring cat for quarantine

PA Auckland A cat, belonging to a Belgian yachting family visiting New Zealand who were ordered to have their pet destroyed or deported by Thursday, may be quarantined in Australia. The acting director of the Animal Health Division of the Ministry of Agriculture, Dr John Hellstrom, said he would know in one or two days if the cat, Samba, could be quarantined in Australia. Samba belongs to the Svensson family who have been in New Zealand for three months in their ketch Mariavah at pile moorings at Westhaven, Auckland. The Svenssons’ visas have been extended but a Ministry of Agriculture rule prohibits pets on overseas yachts in New Zealand waters staying for more than three months. The family say they have nowhere to send the cat, who has sailed the world with them for three years and is too scared of water to leave the ketch.
