Powerboat flips
PA Wanganui A veteran powerboat racer, Matt Morrison, of Palmerston North, is in hospital after a spectacular accident on the Wanganui River. The 62-year-old national champion suffered bruising and some facial injuries when his boat Avalanche 111 capsized at lOOkm/h during a warm-up for a Wanganui Motor Boat regatta event on Sunday afternoon.
The Central Zone Powerboat - Association president, Dennis Dustin, of Levin, said the 7.5 litre powerboat was accelerating away from a turn when it abruptly flipped and sank. Mr Morrison; who has an artificial right leg, appeared to have been trapped underwater in the hull for about a minute. He came to the surface just as a crash rescue boat crewman dived in to help, Mr Dustin said.
