Royal Sceptre scores a hat-trick

The former South Island galloper Royal Sceptre is distinguishing himself in his Australian racing — so much so that he might tilt at Doncaster Handicap honours in Sydney next month. His win in the $20,000 Stubby Handicap (1600 m at Flemington on Saturday gave him a hat-trick. He started the sequence in a 1600 m handicap at Seymour, then stepped up to 2000 m to win the Mornington Cup. Royal Sceptre won eight races from the Washdyke

stable of Pat Corboy before he was sold for $24,000 on the bid of the Awapuni trainer-jockey Maurice Campbell at the 19th annual South Island bloodstock sale in Christchurch last August. He was bred by Mrs Corboy, who raced the Noble Bijou-Petite Royale gelding in partnership with Mr Peter South. Royal Sceptre’s brother, Orb, was also sold to Australia after winning the Southland Guineas and several other races for the Corboy stable.
