75th season of league
The Canterbury Rugby League’s seventy-fifth anniversary season begins with the opening round of the annual Radio Avon tournament at the Addington Show Grounds next Sunday.
As in previous years, the playing-through semi-finalists have been seeded into the second round. The other five premier clubs will be in action on Sunday.
Shirley has been drawn against Riccarton, the i winner having the daunting task of meeting mighty Hornby on March 22. The other first round games (with the teams the winner will play in parenthesis) are Kalapoi
v. Sydenham (Halswell), Marist-Western Suburbs v. Linwood (Papanui) and Eastern Suburbs v. Woolston (Addington). The semi-finals and continuation of the plate competition are on March 29, and the tournament final and play-off for third on the night of Wednesday, April 1. The premiership starts three days later and for the more successful sides the club programme can extend to the later stages of the Lion Red League Nationals knock-out in October.
Canterbury’s 75th anniversary celebrations have been set down for Queen’s Birthday Weekend. Scheduled events include an inter-denomina-tional church service, several social functions, a schoolboy gala day, a match between Canterbury and Wellington sides on the Friday night, and a meeting of the top Canterbury and Auckland teams on the Monday afternoon.
