The associate editor, Mr Jim Mahoney, and five branch journalists would loses their jobs. The newspaper would retain an advertising representative in Wellington but all other staff would be based in Auckland.

Mr John Giles, the general manager of the newspaper’s publisher, News Media Ownership, Ltd, said “Truth” had lost revenue during the last six months. The News Media Ownership is owned by Independent Newspapers, Ltd.

Mr Giles said the newspaper was adopting more of a magazine format and no longer needed the branch office journalists.

Mr Giles said: “We have gone away from our previous history of being a bit of a scandal publication to a bit more entertainment, a bit more human interest, and more personality stories.”
