U.S.-N. Korea thaw reported
NZPA-Reuter Tokyo The American Secretary of State, George Shultz, has told Japanese leaders that Washington is moving towards relaxation of its policy towards communist North Korea, a Japanese newspaper said yesterday. The “Yomiuri Shimbun” quoted a source who travelled with Mr Shultz on his Asian tour last week as saying that the
Secretary made the remarks in separate meetings last Friday with the Prime Minister, Yasuhiro Nakasone, and Foreign Minister, Tadashi Kuranari. No official comment was immediately available. The United States, which has no trade relations with North Korea, could ease the exchange of personnel to begin with, the daily
said. Mr Shultz, who also visited China and South Korea, was quoted as saying in Tokyo that there was a big possibility of North and South Korea shortly resuming talks. North Korea suspended political, economic and Red Cross talks with Seoul last year in protest against an annual joint military exercise between the United States and the South.
