Bowling club raises $8200 for diabetes
The Papanui Bowling Club’s charity tournament and subsequent auction on Saturday raised $B2OO for the Christchurch diabetes research unit. “I am amazed at the generosity of members and friends of the club in supporting the Diabetes Society in its quest for funds for research,” said the head of the research team, Dr Russell Scott. The tournament, sponsored by New World, was
the sixth charity tournament run by the Papanui club. The tournament and auction was attended by about 300 people, and the amount raised, $5OOO, was boosted to a record $B2OO by further donations. The funds will enable the team’s research into the genetic cause of insu-lin-dependent diabetes, which occurs predominantly in young people, to continue at its present rate for at least six months.
