Parties select candidates
An Ahaura dairy farmer and prominent National Party official, Mr Gordon Garwood, has been selected as the party’s candidate for the West Coast electorate.
Mr Garwood, aged 42, was chosen during a selection meeting in Greymouth on Saturday. The meeting went to the full number of ballots before the final decision, according to electorate secretary Mrs Iris Hambleton.
Mr Garwood, bom and educated in Wellington, served with the Royal
New Zealand Artillery for 10 years, including two tours of duty in Vietnam, before leaving the Army and taking up dairy farming.
At another selection meeting, the Labour Party has chosen Mr Chris Constable, aged 42, an insurance consultant, as its North Canterbury candidate.
Mr Constable was bom in Oxford and educated at the Oxford District High School. He farmed in North Canterbury before working in the retail industry in Rangiora and Culverden.
