400 teachers at mathematics conference
More than 400 primary schoolteachers attended a one-day mathematics conference in Christchurch on Saturday. The conference, organised by the Primary Schools Mathematics Group, focused on the new primary school programme, “Beginning School Mathematics,” a scheme expected to start in most Christchurch schools this year.' Delegates from throughout the South Island attended the workshops and talks, at the Christchurch Teachers’
College. The conference is organised annually, but according to a spokeswoman, Mr Margaret Ngatai, the new mathematics scheme attracted widespread interest among teachers. “It is a new scheme and they obviously wanted to learn about the programme, the first provided by the Department of Education since 1961.” "Beginning ' School Mathematics” had already attracted interest from overseas education lists, she said.
